While being taken into custody, a 16-year-old Daytona Beach resident wanted for stabbing a fellow teen with a knife had a medical episode and lost his life.

Aaron A. Moten died at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando early Wednesday morning (May 25, 2022), hours after officers found him in the back yard of a residence on Continental Drive. He was taken to Palmer after paramedics transported him to Halifax Health Medical Center (HHMC) in Daytona Beach.

It all started at 8:25 p.m. the night before (May 24, 2022) when the Daytona Beach Police Department (DBPD) was notified by Volusia County emergency dispatchers of a stabbing call at a residence on Imperial Drive.

Shortly after arriving on scene, first responders found the female victim – a 17-year-old Daytona Beach resident – outside of the home and bleeding from multiple stab wounds on her body, including her arms, legs and head. Paramedics transported the victim from the scene to HHMC for treatment, where she is currently in stable condition.

Witnesses provided DBPD with a description of the suspect – since identified as Moten – as more officers canvassed the immediate area in search of him. A K-9 team tracking from the crime scene found Moten lying face-down on the ground in the back yard of the Continental Drive property.

Moten was taken into custody at that point without any use of force and paramedics were called in immediately to evaluate him. Moten became unresponsive soon afterward and officers carried him to a front yard along Continental Drive to meet up with those paramedics. He was revived by paramedics before his arrival at HHMC.

The Orange County Medical Examiner’s office will perform an autopsy on Moten’s body in order to determine the exact cause of death. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is also involved in this investigation.

Investigators believe Moten and the victim knew one another, but the exact motive for the attack remains unclear.

Crime scene technicians found a blood-covered knife inside the Imperial Drive home while processing for evidence.

Prior to this incident, Moten was actively listed as a missing juvenile and had an active arrest warrant on charges of battery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and deprivation of the 911 emergency service. It was related to a domestic violence case reported overnight on May 24th at another location.
