It’s normal to want to give money to someone who’s down and out, but often times it’s the worst thing you can do. Panhandling on busy roadways can be dangerous for panhandlers and motorists. Also, giving money prolongs the situation because small cash donations keep people trapped in the cycle of panhandling. A better alternative is to donate to reputable nonprofit agencies, charitable organizations and community groups. They offer assistance to veterans, children, underemployed and homeless people. They specialize in programs aimed at providing meals, childcare, literacy skills; finding jobs and housing as well as offering health, addiction and counseling services.

Hotline available (386) 999-HELP

A hotline is available for callers to request an outreach team be dispatched to visit people who may be candidates for First Step Shelter or other resources. The number is (386)999-HELP and calls are answered Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The program is a collaboration between First Step Shelter and the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.

About First Step Shelter

The First Step Shelter in Daytona Beach opened in late 2019 as a shelter for single adults in Volusia County. First Step leverages services and resources, in partnership with fellow community organizations, to reduce homelessness in the surrounding area. With a team of professionals, they go beyond assessment and temporary shelter by addressing shelter residents’ medical, social, spiritual, mental, occupational and financial needs. As shelter residents become stable and self-sufficient, they are transitioned into housing.
