WEB_Swearing-In_Nov 6 2020

Incoming Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari Young will be officially sworn in during a public ceremony beginning at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 6, at City Hall.

The ceremony will air live on DBTV, which can be accessed at www.codb.us/DBTV, Spectrum Channel 490, and on the city’s and police department’s Facebook pages.

To help prevent the spread of COVID-19, social distancing protocols will be in place for the ceremony, which will be on the front steps of City Hall located at 301 S. Ridgewood Ave. Limited seating will be available for ceremony attendees and people are asked to wear face coverings. If there is inclement weather, the ceremony will move inside to the City Commission chambers, which will also have limited seating capacity.

Parking is available at City Hall, as well as in additional locations:

• Brown & Brown Insurance, on the northwest corner of Orange and Ridgewood avenues

• St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 216 Orange Ave.

• 5th District Court of Appeal, 300 S. Beach St.

• Multiple public parking areas accessed off Palmetto Avenue behind the shops on Beach Street

Young, 42, will be the department’s first African American police chief and its 17th chief since 1919. Young has served as the department’s deputy chief since 2017 and has been a member of the command staff for the past six years. The police department has an annual budget of $40 million and employs 256 sworn officers and 60 civilian employees.

Young will replace outgoing Chief Craig Capri, who is retiring from the Daytona Beach Police Department after a 30-year career. Capri served as police chief since 2017.
