Summer Splash Bash
Youth are invited to a Summer Splash Bash from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 3, at the city’s Cypress Aquatic Center. There will be free pool admission for the first 70 kids, ages 16 and under. As part of the event there will be free hotdogs, chips and drinks, music and fun.
The Summer Splash Bash is sponsored by Commissioner Quanita May, Commissioner Paula R. Reed and the City Manager's Office. Cypress Aquatic Center is located at 981 George Engram Blvd. in Daytona Beach.
July 4 Veterans Ceremony and Parade on Main Street
The Marine Corps League Daytona is hosting a special July 4th Veterans Ceremony and Parade on Main Street in observance of Independence Day.
The ceremony begins at 9 a.m. Sunday, July 4, by the Clock Tower between the Boardwalk and the Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort at 100 N. Atlantic Ave. Mayor Henry will read a proclamation as part of the ceremony that will honor deceased Master Gunnery Sgt. Hobson McLeod-Bethune, who retired from the U.S. Marine Corps. McLeod-Bethune, born in Daytona Beach in 1956 and the grandson of Dr. Mary McLeod-Bethune, served for 28 years with the USMC.
Following the ceremony there will be a parade featuring combat veterans, as well as military organizations, beginning at 10 a.m. Sunday that starts at the east end of Main Street and travels to the base of the Main Street Bridge. The public can view the parade from the sidewalks along Main Street.
There are more than 20 participants in the parade including the Coastal Florida Police and Fire Pipes & Drums, Team Red, White & Blue, numerous veterans’ organizations and the city’s fire and police departments.
For the parade, motorist should allow for extra time when traveling in the area Sunday morning. Roads affected for the parade include:
- Beginning at 9 a.m. Main Street will be closed to motorists from Halifax Avenue to Atlantic Avenue.
- Halifax Avenue, Peninsula Drive and Atlantic Avenue will remain open until the parade reaches those intersections, which at that time, the intersections will be closed, and the north and southbound traffic will be stopped to allow the parade to cross.
