Summer Splash Bash postponed

The Summer Splash Bash scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 7, has been postponed and will be held at a later date that will be announced. Youth who come to the pools Saturday, Aug. 7, will still receive free admission.

The Campbell Aquatic Center, located at 400 S. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., is open from noon to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday (closed on Sunday).
The Cypress Aquatic Center, located at 981 George W. Engram Blvd., is open from noon to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday (closed on Sunday).

City hosts three COVID-19 vaccine clinics; offers gift card incentive

There will be three community vaccination clinics where Volusia County recipients will receive a $50 Walmart gift card* for each vaccine in the two-shot series (for a total of $100). Family Health Source will supply and administer Moderna vaccines.

The gift card incentive is part of Mayor Derrick Henry’s initiative to encourage reluctant residents to get vaccinated, and the cost of the gift cards is provided by Jon Hall Chevrolet and Brown & Brown Insurance.

Dates, locations and times of upcoming city-sponsored vaccination clinics where gift cards will be given:

Tuesday, August 10: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Dickerson Community Center, 308 S. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
Wednesday, August 11: 2 to 6 p.m.
Midtown Community Center, 925 George W. Engram Blvd.
Thursday, August 12: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Schnebly Rec Center, 1101 N. Atlantic Ave.

Special Election to be held for Zone 2 City Commission seat

Due to Commissioner Aaron Delgado’s resignation, the city’s Charter requires a special election to fill the vacated seat in Zone 2. Daytona Beach's City Commission approved an ordinance calling for the Special Municipal Election at their Wednesday meeting.

Potential candidates, who must reside in Zone 2 for at least six months prior to the first day of the qualification period, should contact City Clerk Letitia LaMagna by calling (386) 671-8023. An appointment will be scheduled to review the requirements and necessary paperwork to run for the seat. Only registered voters in Zone 2 will be able to cast a ballot. Purple Heart ceremony at City Hall honors service members

Purple Heart recipients were honored this morning with a ceremony on the steps of City Hall. As part of the ceremony, proclamations were read by Mayor Derrick Henry, Florida Senator Tom Wright and Volusia County Councilwoman Billie Wheeler. In addition, Mayor Henry made a special presentation to Purple Heart recipients, announcing that there is now a designated parking space at City Hall for them.

The Purple Heart is the oldest military award still presented to American service members. The ceremony was organized by the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 316, Marine Corps League Daytona and Zone 4 Commissioner Stacy Cantu. National Purple Heart Day is Saturday, Aug. 7.

Daphne Cooper to perform Aug. 14 for Midtown Music Concert Series

Daphne Cooper to perform at next Midtown Music Concert Aug. 14

The city-sponsored Midtown Music Concert Series continues in August with a performance at 7 p.m. by Daphne Cooper Saturday, Aug. 14, at Daisy Stocking Park.

The performance is part of the free summer concert series, which will bring the best local bands to the area. Daisy Stocking Park is located at 550 Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Blvd. Food and drink vendors will be onsite. Attendees can bring their own chairs; however, coolers are not allowed.
