Tours of Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune statue exhibit now available

Don’t miss seeing the Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune statue exhibit at the News-Journal Center (221 N. Beach St.) in downtown Daytona Beach. The statue celebrates the life and legacy of Dr. Bethune and will be on temporary display through Dec. 12. It will then be transported to Washington D.C. for its permanent placement in the U.S. Capitol.
 
There is no cost to see the exhibit; however, tickets are required. Tours are available daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information and tickets, visit www.MMBStatue.org

29th annual Biketoberfest starts today

29th annual Biketoberfest starts Thursday

Bikers are rolling into town for this year’s Biketoberfest®. The annual fall motorcycle rally continues through Sunday. We are anticipating about 125,000 visitors to the area for this year’s event. Most of the event traffic will be centered in Daytona Beach, particularly around Main Street, downtown Daytona Beach and Daytona International Speedway.
 
Motorists wanting to enter or leave beachside are encouraged to use the bridges at International Speedway or Seabreeze/Oakridge boulevards. “Motorcycle Only” traffic will be in effect for Main Street. Other vehicles will be directed elsewhere or must receive special permission to access that area. More information is on the Daytona Beach Police Department’s website.

Road resurfacing efforts kick into high gear

Starting this week crews are beginning the process of rehabilitating two neighborhood streets – Warnock Avenue, from White to Seneca streets, and Mississippi Street, from Iowa to Alabama streets.

Crews will work from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. There may be temporary lane/road closures during construction.

The work is part of the city’s road resurfacing efforts, which include more than 20 roadway segments on the beachside also scheduled to be repaved starting later this month. A list of the roadways to be repaved and more information is on the city’s website.

Residents are invited to a quarterly CodeStat meeting 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, at Our Lady of Lourdes at 1014 N. Enjoy Oktoberfest Daytona Beach style from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23. The event is free and will be on Beach Street at Magnolia Ave. Attendees can enjoy authentic German food including bratwurst, sauerkraut and Bavarian pretzels, live music entertainment by The Swinging Bavarians, food trucks and more. Beach Street will be closed to traffic from International Speedway Boulevard to Orange Avenue for the event. Free parking is available behind the shops on Beach Street. The event is hosted by the Riverfront Shops of Daytona Beach.

Tickets on sale to see Cirque Dreams Holidaze at Peabody Auditorium

Tickets are on sale for the family holiday spectacular Cirque Dreams Holidaze, a Broadway-style musical performing at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, at Peabody Auditorium.
 
Tickets are available for purchase at www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at (800) 982-2787 or between the hours of 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Peabody Box Office located at 600 Auditorium Blvd. Ticket prices are $43, $53 and $63 plus applicable surcharges. Groups of 15 or more may reserve tickets by contacting the group sales coordinator at (386) 671-3466.
 
Show attendees will celebrate the most wonderful time of year with more than 20 of the world’s critically acclaimed and accomplished artists and circus acts gift-wrapped in over 300 imaginative and one-of-a-kind costume designs. Broadway singers will perform original music along with new twists on seasonal favorites such as “Deck the Halls,” “Winter Wonderland” and “Jingle Bell Rock.”
