New Zone 2 City Commissioner voted into office

Congratulations to Zone 2 City Commissioner-elect Ken Strickland, who won Tuesday’s election and will serve the remainder of a four-year term (until November 2024). His swearing-in ceremony will be prior to the City Commission meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17, at City Hall.

Rain or shine: Household Hazardous Waste Day is Saturday

Despite a forecast of wet weather, the city’s free household hazardous waste disposal event for Daytona Beach residents will be 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, at the city’s Public Works facility located at 950 Bellevue Ave. At the event, residents can dispose of unwanted household hazardous waste including, but not limited to, paint and paint thinners, solvents, pesticides, fertilizers, household chemicals, batteries, pool chemicals, anti-freeze, car wax, light bulbs, motor oil and propane tanks.

Materials not accepted include fuel, gas cans, tires and lawn equipment (mowers, trimmers and gas-powered yard maintenance items).

Halifax Art Festival is this weekend

Enjoy arts, crafts, music, food and fun at the Halifax Art Festival this weekend. The festival will be on Beach Street from Orange Avenue to International Speedway Boulevard, Magnolia Avenue, and NEW this year on City Island in the downtown area of the Riverfront Shops.

Festival hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. There is no charge for admission, and there is plenty of free parking behind the shops on Beach Street.

Second city staff walking tour planned for beachside Nov. 10

City Manager Deric C. Feacher kicked off his first walking tour with staff, residents and business owners Thursday in the Midtown area. The purpose of the tour was to identify areas where businesses can grow, seek better zoning for individuals to have greater use of their properties, locate code issues and discuss how the city can best position itself as a destination of choice. Walking tours are another example of the city’s commitment to removing bureaucratic barriers and improving community engagement.

The next walking tour is planned for Wednesday, Nov. 10, in areas on the beachside.

FDOT hosts public meeting to evaluate proposed transportation solutions

The Florida Department of Transportation is hosting a community meeting from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, at the Ocean Center.

The meeting is part of a study being conducted to evaluate proposed transportation solutions for segments of Atlantic Avenue, East International Speedway Boulevard, Main Street, Seabreeze Boulevard and Oakridge Boulevard. Corridor concepts will be presented, which include revisions based on community input garnered at the first community meeting in July.

Residents can participate in multiple ways – in-person, by phone and virtually. Advance registration is required for the virtual option.

Beach Street Streetscape designs being considered

Public meeting planned for Nov. 15
The public will have an opportunity to learn about and provide feedback on different design options for the second phase of the Beach Street Streetscape, which includes the roadway from Bay Street to Fairview Avenue and a section of Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Boulevard from Beach Street to Ridgewood Avenue.

An informational meeting is scheduled for 5 to 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 15, at City Hall, Room 149. City staff and the project’s designer Parker Mynchenberg will explain the details for each proposed alternative.
