Oderless smoke testing of pipes starts on beachside

Oderless smoke testing of pipes starts on beachside

This week crews began “smoke testing” the city’s sewer lines on the beachside. Smoke testing is an efficient and common test method used to identify defects such as cracks, leaks or faulty connections in the sanitary sewer collection system.

During smoke testing, workers will blow a dense white smoke into the sewer system from the street and monitor where the smoke escapes, quickly revealing any cracks or breaks in pipes. The smoke is odorless, non-toxic and non-staining. It dissipates quickly and will not harm pets or plants or leave a residue.

Utilities will not be interrupted during the testing process. Crews are working 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, weather permitting, and are in recognizable uniforms. Residents in the testing area were notified via informational door hangers and can call (888) 645-9570 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. if they have questions. The testing is scheduled to be complete by April 29.

Public invited to meeting to learn about beachside roadway improvements

Public invited to meeting to learn about beachside roadway improvements

The Florida Department of Transportation is hosting a community meeting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 14, at the Schnebly Recreation Center, 1101 N. Atlantic Ave, for the public to learn about improvements planned on Atlantic Avenue from Seabreeze Boulevard to Milsap Road. The purpose of this project is to evaluate proposed transportation solutions, considering capacity, safety and multi-modal enhancements along the corridor, while minimizing potential impacts to the natural and human environments.

To accommodate the public, FDOT is offering multiple ways for people to learn about the project and provide feedback:

  • In-Person Open House Option: People may attend the meeting at the Schenbly Recreation Center.
  • Virtual Option: Interested persons may join the Virtual Public Meeting from a computer, tablet or mobile device. For this option, advance registration is required.
  • Phone Option (Listen Only): Participants may join the meeting in listen-only mode by dialing (866) 901-6455 and entering the passcode 180-815-852 when prompted.

All meeting materials, including the presentation, will be available on the project website prior to the meeting. For more information, contact Steven Buck at (386) 943-5171 or by email.
