City Commission to meet Wednesday

The City Commission will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, at City Hall. Commission meetings are broadcast online and on Spectrum Channel 490. They are also recorded and available for viewing online. Residents can sign up to receive agendas via text or email.

A public hearing on the proposed millage rate of 5.4300 will be on the meeting agenda. The rate is a reduction from last year’s rate of 5.5300.

Property taxes are the largest single revenue source of the General Fund, which funds many of the primary services of city government including police protection, fire service, park maintenance, recreation activities and city planning

Road resurfacing continues in neighborhoods

This week crews from P&S Paving are completing resurfacing Fentress Boulevard. Next, they will start work on Jean Street between Orange Avenue and South Street, and then move on to portions of S. Caroline Street, S. Keech Street, Loomis Trail and South Street.

The improvements are part of the city’s ongoing road resurfacing program. Working hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday and should take about one to two weeks to complete. Motorists are urged to use caution.

Building permit and inspection fees waived in Midtown area

Building permit and inspection fees continue to be waived for commercial and residential properties within the borders of Mason Avenue to Shady Place and Nova Road to Ridgewood Avenue. Eligible projects include, but are not limited to, interior renovations, replacing or repairing roofs, adding fencing, improving or installing a driveway and replacing windows or doors.

Since the two-year program began in October, 432 residential and commercial permits have been issued, representing a job value of $6.8 million and almost $100,000 in savings for repair, upgrades and beautification projects.

Rocket Man will take you on a walk down the Yellow Brick Road and relive the highs and lows of Elton’s long career.

All concerts start at 7:15 p.m. There will be food trucks and vendors on site. The Bandshell summer concerts are free to the public with the option to purchase VIP seats for $10 plus applicable surcharges. Guests are welcome to bring their own chairs to the concerts or purchase VIP tickets, which include a seat. VIP tickets are available for purchase online or between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Peabody Box Office at 600 Auditorium Blvd.

City hosts Family Literacy Night

To encourage and promote literacy at home, families are encouraged to stop by the Fall into Reading– Family Literacy Night from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20 at the Midtown Cultural & Educational Center.

Local organizations including Volusia County School Child Find, Nutrition Literacy and the Volusia County Library will distribute various materials and resources. The Midtown Cultural & Educational Center is at 925 George W. Engram Blvd.
