Building permit fees waived for storm repairs

The City of Daytona Beach is waiving building permit fees through Dec. 5 for work to repair or restore damage caused by Hurricane Ian. Waivers apply to commercial and residential properties within city limits.

It is the city’s intent to expedite all storm-related repair permits. Examples of permit types:

roofing
window and door replacement
soffit/fascia/siding repair or replacement
a/c and water heater replacement
electrical repairs and replacement
screen enclosures
fences
docks
sheds

Through Oct. 4, property damage assessments in Daytona Beach was preliminarily estimated at $18 million, a dollar amount forecasted to rise higher as additional properties are more thoroughly investigated, officials say.

City to purchase high-water rescue vehicle

At Police Chief Jakari Young’s request, city commissioners approved an emergency purchase of a used high-water rescue vehicle designed to perform evacuations in flooded areas like those conducted during the city’s response during Hurricane Ian. With 48-inch tires and rear steps for easier accessibility, the military vehicle can operate in more than eight feet of water and carry up to 25 passengers. The heavy-duty truck is expected to be delivered in the next few weeks.

City to start storm debris collection Monday

Storm-related debris removal will start Monday, Oct. 10. Debris should be placed in the public right of way and not in roadways, near storm drains or mailboxes, under powerlines or blocking fire hydrants. Debris is required to be placed into separate piles for vegetation, construction and demolition materials and appliances. Leaves, branches and limbs should be loose and not bagged or in containers. DRC, the private contractor hired by the city, will have 10 trucks working 7 days a week from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Food Brings Hope hosts Emergency Relief Drive Saturday

Food Brings Hope is partnering with Jeep Beach, Second Harvest, Halifax Urban Ministries and Daytona Beach Police Department to provide emergency relief to our residents impacted by Hurricane Ian. Hot meals, non-perishable food bags and other supplies will be available (while they last), starting at noon Saturday, Oct. 8, at Campbell Middle School.
