With the summer just around the corner, residents can soak up the sun by having a splashing good time from noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday at Cypress Aquatic Center, 981 George W. Engram Blvd. The family-friendly pool will be open Memorial Day.

The city’s Planning Board, which usually meets on the fourth Thursday of the month, will not meet this week. The next Planning Board meeting will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 1, in the Commission Chambers at City Hall. Sign up to receive the agenda via text or email.

Permits & Licensing offices will be closed June 2

Permits and Licensing offices will be closed Friday, June 2, for staff training on a new software system. Inspections will also be paused this day to allow for the training. Offices will reopen Monday, June 5.

This week, we’re recognizing the city’s Public Works Department during National Public Works Week. From maintaining roads to producing drinking water, this team of almost 300 employees works hard to keep our city thriving. They often work long hours (24/7), behind the scenes and are always on-call for emergencies. This essential department is dedicated to providing the best service possible and focuses on infrastructure and the appearance of our community, managing: 

  • Transportation
  • Maintenance of streets, sidewalks, trails and city facilities
  • Water, stormwater and sewer operations
  • Solid waste collection
  • Beautification projects
  • Engineering services

Veterans Museum & Education Center celebrates one year in new home

The Veterans Museum & Education Center will celebrate the one-year anniversary of opening its doors at 302 Vermont Ave. in Daytona Beach with a celebration from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 3. 

An unveiling of a new POW/MIA monument, remarks from Senator Tom Wright, City Commissioners Stacy Cantu (Zone 4) and Dannette Henry (Zone 5) and refreshments are part of the planned festivities.

Veterans tribute at the Daytona Beach Bandshell

There will be a special tribute to local veterans at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 3, at the Daytona Beach Oceanfront Bandshell. Join City Commissioners Stacy Cantu (Zone 4) and Dannette Henry (Zone 5), Senator Tom Wright and other dignitaries for this special recognition. Enjoy the singing of the national anthem, a patriotic flyover followed by a free concert at 7:15 p.m. by Fleetwood Max, a Fleetwood Mac Tribute. Fireworks over the ocean will follow the concert at about 9:45 p.m. The free concert is sponsored by Friends of the Bandshell, Boardwalk Merchants and the City of Daytona Beach.

Citizen advisory boards play an important role in shaping a community and active residents are a key component of healthy, prosperous neighborhoods. More than 150 community leaders serve on the city’s different advisory boards. They provide guidance, expertise and recommendations, from a citizen’s perspective to the City Commission on important issues and projects in Daytona Beach.

We are looking for additional volunteers to serve on the following boards:  

  • Affordable Housing Advisory Board
  • Beachside Redevelopment Board
  • Beautification/Tree Advisory Board
  • Board of Adjustment
  • Board of Building Codes
  • Citizens' Police Review Board
  • Downtown Development Authority
  • Economic Development Advisory Board

July 4 Veterans Parade on Main Street

July 4 Veterans Parade on Main Street

There will be a Fourth of July Veterans Parade, beginning at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 4, on Main Street in Daytona Beach. The parade will pay tribute to veterans and first responders and is being organized by Volusia Veterans.  

 The parade will start on Main Street at Atlantic Avenue and travel west on Main Street to the base of the Main Street Bridge. The public can view the parade from the sidewalks along Main Street. 

Interested veteran organizations, youth groups and bands wanting to participate in the parade, should contact Sam McCloud or Daytona Beach Zone 4 Commissioner Stacy Cantu.  

In addition to the parade, there will be a special July 4th Veterans Ceremony beginning at 9 a.m. by the Clock Tower between the Boardwalk and the Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort at 100 N. Atlantic Ave. that will be presented by Volusia Veterans and is sponsored by the city.
