Smoke Testing Sewer Lines

If you see smoke coming from the ground, don’t panic! Starting next week, crews will be performing a procedure known as “smoke testing” of sewer lines in select areas of the city.

This testing is a process where non-toxic, harmless smoke is pumped into the sewer system to detect leaks and cracks. Utilities are not affected during the process. Residents in areas being tested will receive advance notice. For questions, call (888) 645-9570.

Volusia County Fertilizer Rules in Effect Through Sept. 30

To help protect our waterways during Florida’s rainy season, Volusia County’s fertilizer ordinance is in effect through Sept. 30. Fertilizer containing nitrogen or phosphorus may not be applied when rain is expected or falling. Outside of the blackout period, nitrogen fertilizer may only be used if it contains at least 50% slow-release nitrogen. Fertilizer must never be applied within 15 feet of any body of water. These rules help reduce nutrient runoff and protect our rivers, canals and the ocean.

Sales Tax Exemption on Emergency Preparedness Supplies Now in Effect

Florida families can now better prepare for emergencies and protect their households with year-round tax savings, thanks to House Bill 7031. Beginning Aug. 1, sales tax is permanently eliminated on essential disaster preparedness supplies, including batteries, fuel tanks, portable generators, tarps and ground anchors or tie-down kits.

Bottled water, first aid kits and many grocery food items are already tax-free, further supporting readiness efforts for Florida families. Key health and safety products will also be tax-exempt year-round starting Aug. 1. These include fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, sunscreen, insect repellent, life jackets and bicycle helmets. As hurricane season continues, now is the time to take advantage of these savings and make sure your household is storm-ready. Starting today, key disaster prep items are permanently sales tax exempt in Florida. See the full list of tax-exempt supplies and learn more at https://tinyurl.com/5fyvs979.
