[ARCHIVED] Two Sent To Hospital Following Segrave Street Crash

Accident edit 488 x 450 20-11724

The Daytona Beach Police Department (DBPD) is actively investigating an early morning traffic collision which ended with at least two people hurt.

Paramedics took one of the men involved to Halifax Health Medical Center (HHMC) as a trauma alert soon after their arrival on the 100 block of South Segrave Street (adjacent to Wawa).

First responders arrived on scene at 3:24 a.m. today (July 16, 2020) after a call was placed to 911. Members of DBPD’s Traffic Homicide Unit (THU) arrived soon afterward to process the scene for evidence and conduct interviews.

Investigators believe a four-door red 2006 Nissan Titan XE (photo to side) was heading north on Segrave when it veered into the opposite travel lane. That’s when its driver’s side collided with the driver’s side of a four-door maroon 2002 Ford F250 Super Duty which was parked on the southbound side of Segrave.

The Nissan also struck the left side of a black trailer attached to the back end of the Ford and two men who were having a conversation with one another while standing alongside the trailer before crashing head-on into a concrete pole on the west side of Segrave.

The driver and registered owner of the Nissan – a 59-year-old Daytona Beach man – was not ejected from the vehicle and did not have his seat belt in place. The vehicle’s airbags did not deploy. It came to its final rest facing south in the southbound travel lane of Segrave.

No one else was in the Nissan or the Ford at the time, but detectives did talk to a 51-year-old man on scene who told them he came to the area with the Nissan driver prior to the crash and that he did not see the incident because he was using the restroom at a business nearby when it happened.

The Nissan driver went to HHMC as a trauma alert. He is currently listed in critical and unstable condition.

Paramedics also took one of the pedestrians – a 39-year-old Sanford man – to HHMC with possible fractured bones in one of his hands. His condition is not life-threatening.

The other pedestrian involved – a 55-year-old man – was uncooperative with DBPD and left the scene after refusing medical treatment but before detectives could talk to him. He reportedly suffered injuries to the right side of his torso.

Charges may be filed once the investigation is complete, including toxicology results.
